Converting a Lead to a Deal
Leads
•Apr 10, 2026When a lead has been qualified and is ready to enter your active sales pipeline, you convert it to a Deal. Converting a lead moves it into your deal pipeline where it can be tracked through to close.
Navigate to: Leads > [Open a Lead]
How to Convert a Lead
- Open the lead you want to convert by clicking its title.
- Click the Convert to Deal button (usually in the top-right or in the actions menu).
- A conversion form will appear. Fill in the deal details:
- Title — The deal name (pre-populated from the lead title, editable)
- Pipeline — Select which sales pipeline this deal belongs to
- Stage — Choose the starting stage in that pipeline
- Value — The deal value (pre-populated from the lead, editable)
- Expected Close Date — Target close date
- Assignee(s) — Who will own this deal
- Click Convert to confirm.
What Happens After Conversion?
- A new Deal is created with the information from the lead.
- The Lead is marked as converted and removed from the active leads view.
- All activities, notes, contacts, and attachments from the lead are carried over to the deal.
- The deal appears immediately in your Deals pipeline.
Can a Converted Lead Be Reverted?
Once a lead is converted to a deal, the conversion cannot be automatically reversed. However:
- The original lead record remains in the system (marked as converted).
- If needed, you can manually delete the deal and update the lead's status.
Tips for a Smooth Conversion
- Make sure the contact is linked — Before converting, ensure the lead has a Person and/or Organization linked. These will carry over to the deal.
- Choose the right pipeline — Make sure you select the pipeline that reflects where this opportunity belongs in your sales process.
- Set an accurate value — Update the deal value to reflect the most current expectation before converting.
- Assign the right owner — Deals should always have a clear owner to avoid them falling through the cracks.
Linking a Lead to a Project Instead
If the lead is better suited to become a project (e.g., a service engagement rather than a sales deal), you can:
- Open the lead.
- Use the Link to Project option instead of Convert.
- Select an existing project or create a new one.
This maintains the lead record and creates an association with the project without creating a deal.
